ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL

Classrooms are open each day at 7:15 a.m. and school begins at 7:30 a.m.  The cafeteria will open for students at 6:30 a.m.  Students who arrive at school before 7:20 a.m. are required to report to the cafeteria; students should enter the building through the loading dock.  Breakfast is available at 7:25; students should go directly to their lockers and then to 2nd period.  There is a warning bell at 7:25; students are tardy if they are not in 2nd period when the bell rings at 7:30.  After 7:30, students are to report to the high school Attendance Office for an Admit to class.

Students will be dismissed each day at 2:15 p.m.  End of the school day does not mean that student rules end. Whenever Craigmont students are in the building, they are subject to the Memphis City Schools Code of Conduct.  Students should be completely off campus by 2:45 p.m., or enrolled and attending the after school care program, unless supervised by a teacher for a specific activity.  A warning notice will be issued to students on the first occurrence of being on campus unsupervised after 2:45 p.m.  On the second occurrence, students may be issued a Home Suspension.  Continued occurrences will result in more stringent consequences. For repeated cases of children being left unsupervised at school for long periods, the Memphis Police Department will be contacted to transport the student to Juvenile Court.  These responses are necessary for the safety of our students as there are no adults available to supervise children after 2:45 p.m.

Please make every effort to schedule doctor, dental and other appointments around school hours.  Parents and guardians must come to the Main Office to check out their child, and wait for the child there.  Teachers will not release a child without being notified by the Office first.

Persons not identified on our computer systems as parents, guardians, or emergency contacts will not be allowed to check students out of school.

ATTENDANCE

All children are expected to be in attendance and on time each day.  Student absences shall be excused only for the following reasons:  (1) personal illness of the student; (2) death or serious illness in the immediate family; (3) subpoena for court appearance; (4) recognized religious holiday; or (5) any unusual cause acceptable to the principal.  A written note explaining the absence is required and should be submitted to the Attendance Office when a student returns to school.

ØFamily trips, vacations and unexplained absences are considered unexcused.
ØExams may be made up only if the absence is excused.Failure to take an exam results in a grade of zero for the exam.
ØAccording to Memphis City Schools policy, students who were not present for the day are NOT allowed to participate in any after school activities, such as dances or athletic practices.According to TSSAA, schools must forfeit any games in which a student plays when that student was not present during the regular school day.
ØStudents who are absent for extended periods should call the guidance office to get assignments. With the exception of school trips, students must bring a note dated and signed by the parent/doctor to school with a full explanation of the absence.
ØSeniors who wish to make college visits must get approval from an administrator one week prior to the visit to receive an excused absence.
ØSTUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR REQUESTING AND MAKING UP ALL WORK

Students are allowed to make up work as a result of excused absences however; it is the responsibility of the student to make up assignments and tests within a reasonable time. Generally, students are allowed one day to make up assignments for each day missed.

The MCS Policy on Unexcused Absences (BOE 5113) is enforced through the PupilServicesCenter and suspensions are automatically generated at school sites. After 5 (cumulative) unexcused absences, students will be issued a Home Suspension.Upon reaching 10 cumulative unexcused absences students will receive a Board Suspension and the PupilServicesCenter will file an Unexcused Absence Report the TruancyAssessmentCenter and Juvenile Court. Students will receive a Board Suspension for every 5 additional unexcused absences.  A student who accumulates 5 days of unexcused absences will be issued a Home suspension.  A student who accumulates 10 days of unexcused absences will be issued a Board suspension.  A student who accumulates 15 days of unexcused absences will be issued another Board suspension.  A middle, junior, or high school student (grades 6-12) who accumulates 15 days of unexcused absences will have to attend an alternative program that focuses on skill development and character education.

RETURNING FROM ABSENCE

No matter what the reason for an absence (excused or unexcused), a student must receive an Admit to Class slip the day s/he returns to school.  Students must present the admit slip to all their teachers during the day.  It is a very good idea to keep up with these admits, because questions frequently arise at the end of a six weeks or semester.
Notes for absences should be written by the parent/guardian or doctor and include the date(s) of the absence as well as the reason for absence. Teachers are required to keep the notes and attach them to the attendance scanner so that the office keeps up with the documentation. The absence is considered unexcused until a note or doctor’s statement is received.

ABSENTEEISM AND YOUR DRIVER’S LICENSE

It’s the law:  Students wishing to apply for a driver’s license must show proof of school attendance; forms are available from the Main Office.  If you miss 10 consecutive unexcused days, or 15 total unexcused days per semester, you will lose your driver’s license.  If you don’t pass at least 3 subjects each semester, you will lose your driver’s license.

CHECKING-IN & TARDINESS POLICY

Anyone who comes to campus after 7:30 must sign in at the Attendance Office and receive an Admit to Class slip.  If a student is late to any class, the teacher will put the student’s name on a list and submit it to the Attendance Office.  Students must be on time to school and to class.  There is DAILY DETENTION for tardiness to school or to class.  All students checking into school or going to class tardy will do same day detention.  Only students with notes from the doctor will be exempt from detention.

Detention is from 2:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.  This includes students participating in athletics or other extracurricular school activities.  Failure to attend detention will result in a suspension.

CHECKING–OUT

If a student needs to leave campus during the day, s/he MUST sign out through the office and receive a Dismissal from Class slip.  A student must bring a note from a parent or legal guardian to the office by 8:00 a.m.  The note should include the specific reason for dismissal, a parent or guardian signature and the telephone number of the responsible person whose signature appears on the note.  If the student does not bring a note, the parent or guardian MUST come to the office to check the student out.  A student who does not check in/out properly will be suspended.

Students who ride to school must have the parent/guardian or the emergency friend listed on the registration form come into the office to check out the student.  Students who drive to school must bring notes to the office in the morning, so that the staff may call to verify the dismissal.  ALL STUDENTS MUST SIGN THE SIGN-OUT SHEET WHEN LEAVING CAMPUS FOR ANY REASON.  Students should keep the Dismissal from Class slip to show teachers when they return to class.  (Losing this slip could result in assignment to after school detention.)  Most doctors keep afternoon office hours, so students should try very hard to schedule appointments AFTER SCHOOL. Students who are ill and wish to go to the office to check out must have a hall pass and a signed note from a teacher in order to use the telephone.

CODE OF CONDUCT AND DISCIPLINE

The Memphis City Schools does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, handicap/disability, or sex in its programs and activities.  No student shall be denied equal access to or participation in, any school sponsored class, activity, or honors program on the basis of the above.

Students and their parents/guardians who believe the students have been discriminated against have the right to seek corrective action.  Reports of such incidents must be submitted in writing to the principal.  If the necessary corrective action is not taken, an appeal may be made to the Director of Pupil Services, 2597 Avery Avenue, Memphis, TN 38112.

Each student is given a copy of the Memphis City Schools Code of Conduct.  This brochure is the cornerstone of our school disciplinary responses.  Parents and guardians are requested to review this document with their children and sign and return the acknowledgment.

One of the most important lessons education teaches is self-discipline.  Although not a separate subject, in supports the whole educational structure of the school.  Discipline is the training that develops self-control, character, orderliness and efficiency.  It is the key to good conduct and proper consideration for other people.

Therefore, it is the responsibility of each student to operate as a responsible citizen.  The Memphis City Schools establishes the policies governing student conduct.  These policies are upheld by the administration and faculty of Craigmont High School.

Disciplinary referrals and issues at Craigmont High School are generally handled by the assistant principals.

The following types of behavior will result in consequences that range from warnings or conferences, in-school suspension, home suspension, Board Suspension, or even expulsion dependent upon the severity and/or continuation of Code of Conduct violations.  This is not an exhaustive list, other actions not specifically mentioned here that result in disruption of the educational process, health or safety violations, or jeopardizing the good order of school may be subject to sanctions.

It’s the law:  If you have drugs in your possession or if you physically assault any school employee, you will be arrested and suspended for 180 days.

ILLNESS OR INJURY AT SCHOOL

A student who becomes ill at school should get a note or hall pass from his/her teacher and report to the office.  If a student is injured, s/he is required to complete a report of his/her injury, which must be filed by the office with the Board of Education.  In case of illness, students may need to check out (see “checking out”).

Students who bring prescription medication to school are required to give it to the school secretary, properly labeled with dosage information and an authorization letter from the doctor so that it can be administered through the school office.  The school may not give students any over-the-counter medication such as aspirin, allergy medication, or cough syrup.

ADDITIONAL SCHOOL INFORMATION

LIBRARY

Students are welcome to use the library; however, they must have a note from a teacher to use the library during class time.  There is a variety of print and electronic media that students are encouraged to use.  Photocopies may be made for a small fee.

All students who wish to read books must check them out properly at the circulation desk.  Some books, placed on reserve, may only be checked out overnight.  Students are asked to be prompt in returning these books because they are often in heavy demand and other students need them.

LOCKER POLICY

Lockers are the property of the Memphis City Schools and are subject to unannounced search and seizure by authorized personnel.  Mrs. Martin (room 149) and Mr. Allen (main office) are responsible for lockers and students should see him/her in order to get a locker.  Students may request a particular locker, but are not guaranteed their first choice.

In order to receive a locker, students must sign a contract which describes in detail the students’ rights and responsibilities.  Craigmont reserves the right to remove the lock if necessary.

PARKING LOT

Craigmont has two parking lots:  One on Craigmont Street and one on Covington Pike.  The Covington Pike lot and the upper part of the Craigmont Street lot are for teachers and visitors.  Students may park only on the lower lot and on the far western end of the upper lot in the Craigmont Street lot.  Students who park anywhere but the designated student parking areas will lose the privilege of parking on the campus.

All traffic should enter at the west end of the high school lot (closest to the baseball field) and exit on the east end of the parking lot (closest to the Covington Pike).  For safety reasons, this traffic pattern must be observed at all times.

STUDENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO SIT IN CARS ON OR OFF CAMPUS DURING SCHOOL HOURS.    Also, students must LEAVE the campus once they are picked up.  Do not drive around the parking lot before, during, or after school.

TELEPHONES

The telephones in the office are for school business or emergencies.  Students are not allowed to have personal phones in the building at any time.  If a cell phone is taken from a student, the telephone may be retrieved from an administrator by the students’ parent or guardian.

VISITORS

For the protection of our students all visitors wishing to go to classroom areas of Craigmont High School must report to the Main Office to sign-in and receive a Visitor’s Pass.  You will be asked to produce identification and/or leave your Drivers License in order to receive a pass.

Special procedures will be in place for school wide assemblies and events.

FIRE BELL/CIVIL DEFENSE

If the fire bell goes off, everyone must leave the building; exit plans are posted in every room.

ØSTUDENTS MUST STAY WITH THEIR CLASSES SO THAT ATTENDANCE MAY BE TAKEN.

ØAll doors and windows should be closed when exiting the building.

ØThe parking lot driveway should stay completely clear to make room for emergency vehicles.

ØPULLING A FIRE BELL AS A FALSE ALARM IS A CRIMINAL OFFENSE WHICH WILL BE PROSECUTED.

If the Civil Defense signal sounds, everyone is to take cover INDOORS.

Ø STUDENTS MUST STAY WITH THEIR CLASSES SO THAT ATTENDANCE MAY BE TAKEN.

Ø Generally, students in classrooms with an outside wall will exit and line up facing the wall outside of the door.

Ø  Students in classes without an outside wall are to stay in the classroom and face the inside wall.

Ø If you are outdoors, come inside immediately and report to the nearest hallway away from outside doors and windows. Everyone will remain in this position until the all clear is sounded.

STUDENT OWES LIST

Even though public education is free, there can be many expenses.  Any time a student is issued a uniform, library book, textbook, workbook, musical instrument, or any other piece of school property, s/he becomes financially responsible for it and is required to turn it in when the period of use has ended.  Students who do not have the property will be placed on the owes list (updated each semester) and will not receive a report card or be allowed to register for school the following fall until the obligation is cleared.  Students are requested to clear the “owes” with the TEACHER or COACH involved, so that they can make the proper corrections to their paperwork.  During the summer, owes should be paid to Mrs. Stewart.

FREE LUNCH/FEE WAIVER

Some students qualify for free lunch and/or fee waiver.  If you think you might qualify, see Mrs. Taalib-Din in the office for documentation.

CAFETERIA

All students must report to the cafeteria during lunch—no exceptions.  Students are to be in the cafeteria or the patio areas only during lunch.  All other areas are off limits.  Students are to eat in the cafeteria ONLY.  No lunch is to be brought to the student from any source outside the school.  Food should not be taken in the halls, stairways, or classrooms.  Also, lunch cards are not transferable.

When you eat, there always will be classes going on during your lunch period, so please respect those still in class and stay out of the halls until the bell rings.  During lunch, students should stay out on the front patio or in the cafeteria.  Students may bring a lunch or purchase lunch in the cafeteria lines.  Juice machines are available.  Students are responsible for cleaning up after themselves and keeping their area of the cafeteria as clean as possible. Students entering “exit” line will be given cafeteria duty.  FOOD IS NOT PERMITTED OUTSIDE OF THE CAFETERIA.  Reduced price/free lunch and breakfast are available for those who qualify.  See Mrs. Taalib-Din in the high school office for an application.

Students are not permitted to eat lunch in a teacher’s classroom, go to the gym, lounge on the front porch, or use the telephone during lunch periods.  STUDENTS MAY NOT HAVE FAST FOOD BROUGHT TO THEM.

If a weapon and/or drugs are found as a result of the search, the MPD and Office of Security will be notified.  Any student found in possession of a weapon, real or look-alike,  will be subject to disciplinary measures in accordance with the MCS Student Code of Conduct and Board Policies.

The Memphis City Schools allows each school to establish its own policy of assigning meaningful and quality homework.  At Craigmont, each teacher is expected to assign homework lessons that promote mastery of skills and concepts taught during classroom instruction. The weight assigned to homework is established by each teacher, so please be aware of each teacher’s policy.

GUIDANCE SERVICES

The guidance office is open for student and parent conferences.  Students are encouraged to seek assistance for personal problems as well as for any questions related to course selection, requirements for graduation, vocational interests, or college preparation.

College entrance requirements for most of the colleges and universities are available in the guidance office.  Students are encouraged to contact schools and make visits during their junior year so that they may apply for the colleges of their choice during the fall of their senior year.

Teachers and parents may refer a student to guidance for screening, testing, or assistance.  Individual students experiencing difficulties in class are encouraged to seek assistance from guidance.

CLASS SCHEDULE CHANGES

Each spring, Craigmont High School students request classes for the next year and the school master schedule is created based on these requests.  Schedules, once established, will not be changed for reasons other than academic course selections and should be kept to a minimum.  Changing schedules often results in a long-range failure to meet college graduation requirements.  Schedules will not be changed for the purpose of changing lunch periods or teachers.

PARENT CONFERENCES

Parents are always welcome at Craigmont and we encourage them to stay in close contact with the teachers about their student’s progress.  If your parent wishes to have a Conference with a teacher, s/he should contact the guidance office to schedule an appointment.  Parents are asked to schedule conferences during the teacher’s planning period, if possible.  The main office CANNOT schedule parent conferences.

Unfortunately, parents who drop in wishing to meet with a teacher are often disappointed because the teacher cannot leave his/her class, so please be understanding of this request.

Students and their parents should consult the school calendar to see the dates of the scheduled parent/teacher conferences.  The date of Open House will be announced early in the fall.

Parents who are dissatisfied with a parent conference are requested to contact an administrator, instead of the Board of Education.  The Board of Education always will refer a parent back to the school before they take any action.

BOOK BAG/BACKPACK POLICY

BOOK BAGS, BACKPACKS, OVERSIZED PURSES, AND BRIEFCASES WILL NOT BE ALLOWED IN THE CLASSROOMS.  Students are allowed to bring these items to school, but they must leave them in their lockers during the school day.

MCS DISCRIMINATION POLICY

The Memphis city Schools does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, handicap/disability, or sex (including pregnant and parenting status) in its programs and activities.  No student shall be denied equal access to, or participation in any school-sponsored class, activity, or honors program on the basis of the above.

Students and their parents/guardians who believe they have been discriminated against have the right to seek corrective action.  Reports of such incidents must be submitted in writing to the PRINCIPAL.  The route of appeal is (in writing) to:
